"Hi Guy's,

OK I have now hit a bit of a wall in researching my outboard.

Its a Mercury Mariner 40hp 2-stroke 2-cylinder, the year is 1998.
serial no. is 09978947 made in Belgium.
Its pull start but has a mounting for electric start (I may like to add tis feature later)

I am looking to replace the water pump/impeller kit. As I am not sure when these were last checked/changed. also sparking plugs!

Also I know its a bit late as I have now bought the motor but is it any good?

Any weakness I should be aware of? Things/problems to look out for?

Any help would be appreciated
kind regards Tony"

"It was decently built. Has a CD ignition that is not my personal favourite from Merc, but it has worked well for them.

No massive problems with this model. Belgian Mercs and US Mercs are pretty much exactly the same (99% of the time), so parts are interchangable."

Yikes! TMD used weather strip

Yikes! TMD used weather striping on an O-ring for the shifter seal plate--imagine trying to unscrew that sucker someday! And he put the new seal in dry--no lube! Yikes.

"For parts, find a Merc dealer or get a cross ref to sierra parts - personally, would spend the extra few bucks and go with genuine Merc."
