On a AQ225-E and 270 or 280 ( don't know which ) out drive what are the rubber deals sticking out each side on the bottom of the transome shield and what purpose do they serve ? DUH

"They are bypass relief valves

"They are bypass relief valves. They ensure that the engine runs well at idle when the exhaust gas may not have enough pressure to overcome the flapper's resistance. They also add exhaust surface to the exhaust outlet in the lower unit, allowing to run larger CID engines."

"That would be the later 280 o

"That would be the later 280 or 275 drives. They're called "rubber hooks" (hey, I'm part Swedish, and I can't even figure that one out!)

If you'll notice, these allow the idle exhaust to relieve itself at just below the water surface as apposed to the main exhaust which dumps deeper in the water where it requires more pressure.
Helps keep the engine from fuel loading while at idle.

Agree with El P..... adds surface to the over-all outlet area."
