When removing the old filter s

When removing the old filter should I remove the filter with the bowl still attached or should the bowl be spun off first then the throw away filter removed ?

"It's prolly best to remove the entire filter as a unit, thereby not tempting a big gas leak into the bilge. Manytimes, the metal bowl is very tight to the filter. I've had to use a chain wrench on the steel filter shell, then a stuffing box wrench on the bowl to seperate them."
