440 engine issues

I just purchased a 37 foot 198

I just purchased a 37 foot 1982 Marinette. I am having problems with the port side engine. I can not get her above 2500 RPMS and when I do the RPMS will change from 2500 to 1900 without touching the throtle. I would think this would be a carb issue? I can get the starboard engine up to about 3200 RPMS right now. I think that is normal becuase it has to work so hard do to the port side engine running so slow. I also am backfiring on the port side and I have a decent amount of smoke comming out of both engines but only when I am at 1500 RPMS or Higher. Anyone have any ideas.

Have you completely tuned up both engines I would start there try a little seafoam in the carbs or take them apart or soak them in cleaner sounds like a tuneup would help.. ???

Dirty/ watery fuel. Change filters and drain the water separators regularly 'til it goes away.

You are correct that one dead motor pulls the other one down. I can't get over 3 grand with one motor at WOT and the other at cruising rpm.
