Hi ineed help i noticed oil dripping from my 280 stern drive over the winter. So i decided to pull it of the boat. when i removed the universal bellows a lot of oil poured out of the bellows. it did not look milky. is there a seal in the upper unit? If there is what is the procedure and parts needed to fix it thanks? oh yeah what kind of oil for the stern drive?

Regarding the procedure, either get hold of a copy of the Seloc or Clymer repair manuals, or download this workshop manual.

Regarding the oil, the manual usually states "same as the engine", and I have been advocating in the past to follow the manual's instructions. However, it seems that when it comes to higher power packages (say over 200-225HP), using engine oil in the drive is not always the best solution when it comes to gear protection and drive longevity. Therefore, and as a test, I just filled my 280 with synthetic oil from Sierra (part 18-9680-2), which is the aftermarket equivalent of Volvo 75W 90 synthetic oil. I will see how it performs once I take the boat for a test run in a few days. If there is no clutch slippage, I expect this to be a good choice.

This will give you an idea of the range of lubricants recommended by Volvo.
