"This has been discussed but doesn't answer me completely. Last time, we didn't know the problem burned up the starter and damaged the flywheel. Replaced all, put in new impeller, replaced water pump, thermostat, temp sending unit and receiving gauge.
Still get water in heads. I can drain, replace plugs and it runs fine. Not a practical solution.
I saw info on flappers, my mechanic (Volvo dealer)says there are none. Any thoughts, should there be some? If so where and how do I install? Any pictures or diagrams?"

"What drive do you have? If a 280 or 290, some of them came from factory with a flapper attached to them. Part 7 on diagram.

If you cannot get hold or cannot attach one of those to your outdrive, you can find exhaust bellows with flapper valves, like this one. Sierra part 18-2757

"Ok as I'm reading more, Volvo did delete flappers from their units. Mine is a SX/Cobra. If we don't use flappers anymore would different risers make a difference? I have read about using 3" risers but don't really know what that accomplishes.
Otherwise I guess be careful when slowing down and carry a spark plug wrench?"
