"One further question on the Johnson 90 hp, 2-stroke with the two cylinders four cylinders problem. Will running the engine this way cause additional harm to the engine. Thanks for any help."

"It depends! If it's due to an ignition misfire, it probably won't hurt much. If it's not getting fuel/oil, the bearings and cylinder bores may be damaged.

Either way, you want to get it fixed so you can get the most out of her."

"Sorry, Dcreamer' but it does not 'depend'.
If You have one or more cyl's not operating properly, it will affect exhaust back pressure. That pressure is essential as it controls the 'filling' of the other cylinders. Too low pressure, the fuel/air mix 'leaks' out through the exhaust port -lean condition, burned down piston! Too high back pressure - cyl's does not fill completely - lean condition - burned down pistons.
Bottom line: Fix it!
Check compression, check that You have ignition, double check carb and fuel supply to the carb that belongs to the faulty cyl's."

"Oops! Sorry. The marina wrote the wrong model on the bill-of-sale (The 90 hp Johnson, 2-stroke, starting on two cylinders then switching to four at between 2000 and 3000 rpms.) The correct model # is J90PLSSE. Serial # is G047877940. Please tell me that starting on two cylinders and then switching to four is normal for this engine. I've been told that this is normal for some engines."

"No, it is NOT normal whatever

"No, it is NOT normal whatever 'someone' says.
It might be some car engines out on the market that may drop a cyl or more to 'save fuel', but that is another story."
