"I have a '96 Skeeter with a 175 Mariner that's going on its third steering cable. As I recall its a real pain to install a replacement, so I'm hoping that it's possible to drill a small hole in the cable(s) next to the threading/aluminum fitting and send some pressurized WD40 in. Any thought? Maybe just for this upcoming weekend, until I can get it replaced."

"Beware to get any shavings in the cable, could seize it solid.

Also, be careful not to damage the cable itself...

I'd recommend looking into another brand of cable for replacement.

Not ideal to drill and tinker with a life & limb item..."

"I fully agree, no tinkering for this guy. Thanks. The new cable was ordered from Skeeter and came in 2' short - exactly what happened the last time I replaced it. Not sure how many 1996 consoled 1850DV Skeeters there are, but this has been a real pain and now I have a rig that's dry docked until another new cable comes in."

Best to take the sample in for saving a headache later. My experiences shown this most times. And you'd ask that I must have learnt this the first time...
