"1st time boat owner. picked up few month ago. as PM, dropped lower unit and changed empellor, plugs, points, linkage. 1st run on lake, hot light comes on after 30 or 40 mins. removed thermostat. 2nd time time only 10 mins till overheated.

should this motor "pee" water from upper exhaust? only get sputterring of very hot water after removal of T-STAT. lower exhaust blows out a little water. Should I drop lowe unit and recheck seals?"

First thing is to replace the theromstat with a new one. Then see if it still runs hot. If there is any water exiting the exhaust port the pump is working but if you rotated the drive shaft backwards at some point one or more of the impeller blades could have been reversed causing a lower flow rate. This doesn't happen often with a new impeller but it does happen. If you didn't put any type of grease on the inside of the water pump to protect the impeller on start up the impeller could have been damaged as well. There are a few things that can cause this problem. The impeller is installed wrong or was damaged from lack of water on start up. The water feed from the pump is blocked or not installed correct. The engine water jacket is blocked. As I said replace the thermostat & if it is still getting hot then start at the impeller & work you're way up from there.
Make sure all the feed lines are open & their fittings are in good condition & sealing. Try blowing LOW PRESSURE air back through the water jacket to check for any blockage.
Also check that the engine is hot with a lazer temp gun & test the sensor for the light to make sure it is not sending a false signal.
