I have a 1988 Four Winns 200 H

I have a 1988 Four Winns 200 Horizon. I just replaced the Medallion tach with an older Medallion. There is an additional post on the back of the original that is connected to the alternator on the wiring diagram. My question is do I need this connection with the replacement? The tach is working fine but I am worried that I may be causing a prob for the overall elec system.
