"Hello, I have a Mariner 30E (Yamaha built), 1984 I believe, anyway I am trying to remove the lower unit to change the impeller. I removed the 4 bolts and backed off the bottom nut on the shift lever but the unit is "stuck" after dropping only about 2 inches. Do I need to do something else? I changed it a few years ago and I don't remember if I had to do something else to the shif rod. It's in neutral now. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!"

"I got it. There is a barrel nut where the top and lower parts of the shift rod meet. I just backed off the jam nut and turned the barrel nut until the shift rod came loose and then the lower unit slid the rest of the way off. Also when you re-install it putting the motor into reverse will give you more of the barrel nut to work with untill it is threaded. Anyway, that's what worked for me."
