"help... my grandfather has an 89 2.3l omc, he thinks the alternator is going/went out. he has been looking for it and cant find it on the engine. any help would be very grateful. thanks"

"Well.... at the risk of sound a bit smart-assed, it's about as indescrete as Dolly Parton's front side...It's the big alternator shaped component on the front of the engine that the alternator belt is connected to.
If he can't find it, he probably doesn't have the tools and ability to test it.
But he can probably inspect the belts. If the vee belts look ok, I'd probably stop him there, and
maybe recommend taking the boat to a technician if it's more serious than a loose or rotted-off vee belt."
