72 omc inline 4 timing problems

"I've got a 120hp inline 4 (chevy) omc, and I'm trying to get the points and timing correct, but have no idea...looking for help. I tried to "field time it" but it's so damn tempermental. I don't know if I have the points correct to start with! I've forgotten so much and any help would be great...Point, dwell,and the correct timing (? before TDC) ect. Thanks"

"points to .018 and timing to 4 BTDC ( dont have a manual in front of me, timing is either 4 or 6 btdc but I think it's 4 for the 120hp ( i rebuilt one but a few years ago, i've worked on many others but am drawing a blank at the minute.

that will get you close, no dwell setting."
