1995 Johnson 88spl alarm

Just bought a used johnson 88s

Just bought a used johnson 88spl. When I start the motor it runs fine for a couple of minutes and a alarm comes on. It will stay on for about 3 or 4 minutes and go off . The motor seems to smoke just a little but maybe that is normal since I am a newby at this I'm just not sure. The motor is circulating water but I don't if is the correct amount any help would be appreciated thanks

"if it stays on for 3-4 min,i will assume,it is hot horn...it that case,and since it is a new to u eng,inst a new water pump,...new therm's would be a good idea too,as well as pulling the heads and chging the wtr deflectors,...but we can go on and on.......new wtr pump,is a good pl to start."
