"what is the best way to remove the gel seal between the two block halves? Also, should I hit the head surfaces wiht fine sand paper and a piece of glass to resurface them before I rebuild the motor? Thanks for the help."

and yes you should surface the heads before you reassemble ...."

Have you tried lacquer thinner??? be careful when scraping so as not to leave any deep gouges
 
"OMC makes a Gasket and Gel-Se

"OMC makes a Gasket and Gel-Seal removal product.
It is VERY good. Comes with a little straw, (be sure to use the straw) and you spray very lightly the gasket or Gel-Seal that you want to remove. It bubbles up a bit. Let sit, and gaskets and gel-seal literally fall off!!!
It is very caustic..it will burn your skin.
But is is SO MUCH EASIER.
My OMC dealer has it on the retail shelves, not sure if yours will have to order it or if you will need to ask in the service dept. It is good stuff."

"Acetone would probably be cheaper also, since you buy it by the quart or gallon.....
But I was amazed at how good that OMC stuff worked.
Especially on gaskets AND the "gorilla snot"."
