"Recently purchased a 1988 Sea

"Recently purchased a 1988 Sealine Senator 255, twin 120 h.p. Volvo AQ131C engines to Volvo 290SP outdrives. Have a couple of problems.
1) Port engine tachometer is running backwards. ie, Indicator needle (pointer) runs counter clockwise.
2) Port Engine Voltmeter does not indicate. Battery is charging and holding o.k. Alternator appears to be o.k.
Any advise on these points would be very much appreciated."

FIRST: check connections. See

FIRST: check connections. See TACH manual to verilfy proper connections to motor. Diconnect voltmet and check with testing equipment.

Second: Its possible that guages are BAD.

Cholly's point

"Clive:

Cholly's point is right on...being as two instruments on the PORT panel are acting up, I'd suggest starting with the ground leads on that panel. The voltmeter not working indicates 1) broken (open) connection or 2) gauge gone bad.

The tach going 'backwards' is a new one on me.

Anoher option, if you are sure the wiring is ok, is to swap the gauges from Port to Starboard.

Also, check the harness where it connects to the engine. Quite often, they get 'green' on the inside and will cause bizzare gauge behavior."
