Need a second oppion. BF90 199

Need a second oppion. BF90 1997 1800 hrs. running motor and after a few min. heard a loud squealing noise toward lower unit. noise sounded like it was coming from spacer between motor and lower unit where the bushing is for the shaft. pulled foot and checked water pump ok and shaft turns well. saw the seal in the spacer plate was swelled up. drain foot and did not find any metal just the normal wear . have u ever herad of that bushing causing that problem.

"Two questions regards lower unit, (gearcase) noise.
BF50A, (SN BAZL2000636) on 1998 McGregor sailboat. Very low time.
Very loud , repeatable whine at ~2000 RPMs in forward gear. No noise in neutral or reverse. Noise present at ~2000 RPMs in gear when initially started and after prolonged running. Whine ceases at higher and lower RPMs. Have changed gearcase oil twice, no metal, no water evident.
Questions,
1. What is the probability that there is a cause for the whine NOT in the gearcase?
2. Can you recommend a Honda service dealer that likely has the specialized tools and experience to repair the gearcase? I can R&R the gear case and ship anywhere in the states.
Thank you very much for opinions.
Derek"

Used to separate noises that &

Used to separate noises that "rang like a bell" by dropping the lower unit and clamping a water supply directly to the coolant line and running. If the noise went away it was from the lower if still there was part of the power head.

"William M, Thanks for the suggestion on dropping the gear case. Hadn't thought about running without case attached.

Mike -if the wrong oil is mixe

Mike -if the wrong oil is mixed with marine oil it will foam and get pretty good pressure built up in the gear case.

You might try and replace that seal then clean out the gear box and replace the oil with "real" marine oil from a boat dealer.
