Any ideas as to removal would be appreciated

"If it's stuck due to corrosion, shoot penetrating oil up into the pushrod tube, let it sit for awhile, then GENTLY tap the pushrod on the end (not the sides) with a hammer. If it's stuck due to sludge and dirt, tapping and twisting with a pair of vice grips should break it loose. You may want to kick the starter over a couple times during this process to get the cam away from the rod, giving it room to move.

"Had this problem with rod, it was stuck so bad I had to get a dremel with a dimond bit to drill a notch near end then used a 3 foot prybar to wedge it out. Replaced with a new one, works well. Be careful replacing the fuel pump. if you do it wrong you will scratch the surface and the tolerance is small and a scratched push rod will stick."
