"upon starting all works well, lots of water flowing in and out as the motor reaches operating temperature the water slows then stops. Let it cool down and restart all is well until it back to temp and stops again. Any thoughts?"

"The opening of the thermostat

"The opening of the thermostat would increase the water flow through the cylinder/head area.

This may somewhat reduce the pressure for the exhaust manifold water flow
and a partially blocked 'pee-hole' passage might no longer show water.

Does it seem to overheat at all?

You could try a pipe cleaner in the fitting that the 'tell-tale' water tube connects to,
it would be likely that you need to get the gaskets and remove the manifold for a cleaning.

A years run in seawater can really load the salt in there."

"I shut down when I see steam

"I shut down when I see steam from the outlets and no water. Will try the pipe cleaner next time, thanx!"

"Oh-Oh, steam is a sign of overheating that can damage your engine.

Could be as simple as a stuck thermostat, should check before running again.

The steam pressure would overpower the pressure from your water pump
and that would account for the water slow and stop."
