"After limping along with a blown head gasket for an hour, my bilge pump barely able to keep up with the leak, my motor finally died still 6 miles out at sun down.
The coast guard rescuer that jumped aboard found a loose hose clamp to be the blame. The water that collected in the motor cavity was very warm and I later discovered water in the oil. When the motor konked out the tilt drive circuitry blew and the starter shorted out (had to turn off the main switch).About an hour before any of this happened my hand-held GPS malfunctioned. Lucky for us another boat happened along to provide a fix for the coast guard. This was the ONLY other boat out there within a ten mile radius and it showed up about one minute after the engine died.
Moral of the story: Have a back-up GPS and flares and a VHF radio and do a thorough check of your boat before leaving the dock !"
