Whenever I put my throttle int

Whenever I put my throttle into gear for both forwad or reverse I hear a loud thud noise. After the noise the engine feels like it wants to die for a couple of seconds. What is it and how do I fix it? engine is a AQ130c b20 w/ 270 outdrive.

"My idle is a little radical right now. So basicly I dont know. I Have to get the carbs clean, And no the choke isnt on when this happends. I know I need to change the oil in the outdrive and the engine. Its like a big "CLUNK" sound. Im really not too familiar with outdrives, but I know engines pretty well. The boat has been sitting for a while do you think its that and I just need to run it for a while so it can put its self in sink again?"

"Try lowering it to 900 RPM and let us know how it goes. Also, cosider using an inductive or digital tachometer for setting the idle."
