"I am very new owner of old deckboat 1990 with OMC Cobra 5.7 that had registered only about 300 hrs. Within first two hours of my initial voyage the motor quit at about 2100 rpm and grey smoke blew forth for about 30 seconds. Any attempt to restart gives only a single clunk as the starter engages, then nothing. There is normal oil level on the stick, but it seems extra dark brown now. Any suggestions on what went wrong? Have I blown the engine? Any thoughts would help. Yes, I have a call in for a boat mechanic."

"Gary...doesn't sound good, the gray smoke could have been an indicator of oil getting into the cylinders just before it seized? Although at this time you don't know what is seized. You need to remove the drive to see if it is causing the problem if not then it must be the engine. Another thing you can do is remove all the spark plugs to see if any water comes out incase the engine is hydrolocked."
