I have a 1999 Evinrude 115hp m

I have a 1999 Evinrude 115hp motor. It pees well but will overheat 30 seconds after takeoff. The guy at the dealership (expired warranty) said to remove the cap from the thermostat and run some water through. What is everyones opinion about this. Also...is there a picture somewhere online of the thermostat? Thanks
