140 idle over heating

"Hi, newbie to boating world.

"Hi, newbie to boating world. But here is my problem.I just bought a 1969 starcraft islander with a 140 mercruiser. It runs great but at an idle the temp will start raising up fast bring the rpm,s up to about 1200 and it cools back down.and will run at about 150/160. does not have a miss or a sputer sounds great. Any one help me with this."

Sounds like the water impellar in the lower unit it going out. I would definitly check it out. Not too expensive a fix. I f the previous owner ever ran her without muffs on out of the water it probably burned up. Doesn't matter though, the dry rot pretty quick too. -^ yep. I would say stern drive impeller for sure. They are supposed to be changed each season but very few take the time to do it.

Thanks for the help. Pump was shot. New upper and lower housing & impeller. Runs like a top. Doesn't get over 150deg. Thanks again.
