I get a short screech from the starter motor when it disengages from the flywheel. Any idea what can cause this problem? I'm guessing the starter motor has a clutch built in and the clutch movement upon release is causing the noise.

Any suggestions on repair? The engine itself runs perfectly.

The starter may need the bushi

The starter may need the bushings greased or replaced if they are worn enough.
You can put a few drops of oil on the shaft under the starter drive to oil the upper bushing but the starter needs to be taken apart to service the lower bushing.
A little oil where the starter drive rides on the motor shaft may help as well.

"Thanks Charli,
I've lubed the upper areas as you mention. When I did, the motor would not turn the engine. This makes me believe there is a clutch/friction assembly in the motor. When I overlubed the upper bushings, the oil ran into the motor and caused the clutch to slip. Can you confirm there is a clutch in the motor and is it servicable?"
