"I am trying to replace the impeller on my Mercury 5hp outboard made in 1994. The water pump impeller on this engine sits inside a metal, cup-shaped "cartridge". The problem is, I cannot remove the metal cup to replace it. The cup is deeply scored around the opening for the driveshaft and so must be replaced. I have tried tugging on it at the one spot I can grab with needlenose pliers, but it will not budge. I have been dousing it with Liquid Wrench, but still it won't move. The black water pump housing which the cartridge sits in appears to be a hard plastic similar to bakelite.
Can anyone recommend a method on how to dislodge it?"
