"Just bought a 1973 Crestliner 17 Crusader with a 165 OMC outdrive.
When shifting into forward or reverse, there is sometimes a brief loud sound that sounds like a starter engaging while the motor is running or better, it sounds like something metal hitting a fan. The sound is very brief and does not happen all the time. It seems to happen more going into forward than reverse and the sound can happen whether the enging is being shifted into or out of gear. The sound doesn't seem to happen until the engine is at normal operating temperature.
The sound appears to be comming from the rear portion of the engine. Other than this noise, all shifting is normal, the engine runs great and there are no other problems that I have found.
If anyone has any thougts on what this could be or where to start looking/troubleshooting tips it would be greatly appreciated.
