...3000 rpm. Nearly new engine (my neighbors). He had an upgraded ECM installed and was told that may have put the timing belt out of sync. Anyone else seen this? Other thoughts?

I thought the ECM in this case

I thought the ECM in this case controlled primarily the fuel curve. Backfire may be a lean misfire condition. You might take this one to the Cummins diesel message board.
