"I finally got port manifold off after hours of blood sweet and a lot of cursing. I have concluded that the water gasket had leaked around bolts and seized them to manifold, the manifold is in 20 or so pieces now, and I am glad this is finally over with."

Let me reiterate a point made by Jeff. ANTI SEIZE COMPOUND. I've been using this on car applications for years at my garage. Things will almost always come apart years later if you use this stuff.
