"I just bought a 17ft 1972 Kona with 1973 150hp Mercury outboard on it. I'm not sure how old the battery is but it went dead yesterday while at the lake. Now, I know absolutely NOTHING about boat motors. Does this motor have any type of alternator or generator in it? Or do I need to charge my battery before every use?"

"It definitely has a charging system. The problem could be the rectifier or the stator, or both.

Check for A/C voltage at the two wires from the stator to the rectifier. They should be yellow; one might have a grey stripe. If you get good voltage here, the the stator is working, so the rectifier may be the problem. Check the D/C voltage at the red wire on the rectifier. You should read 13-14 volts.
