270 gear housing removal

"I have been out tring to remove the upper gear housing on my 270 but it only comes up about an inch, how does the whole asembely come out. i also cant pull it away from the engine, should it slide right out? Is there any tricks to this process?

"there is a splined sleeve tha

"there is a splined sleeve that connects the upper to the lower driveshaft. sometimes it tries to come with upper, making it hard to remove. shake, rock, or whatever. eventually, law of gravity kicks in, and upper comes off easily."
