Stuck Starter bendix gear

The bendix gear is stuck in th

The bendix gear is stuck in the up position (on the flywheel) on my Merc50 Outboard (2001) so the engine will not turn over. I am a new boater. How can I fix it? How avoid same problem in future?

"Spray the shaft it rides up and down on with a penetrating oil like PB Blaster. After you get it loose, clean the shaft and put a light lubricant on it."

"IBNFISHIN: Your suggestion worked just fine. the gear is now loose and lightly lubricated. But the starter still does not work. The solenoid clicks when I turn the ignition on, but the starter does nothing. I guess I could buy and install a re-built starter, but do you have any further suggestions I could try first or any way of determining if the starter is faulty?"
 
well chances are when the star

well chances are when the starter got stuck up it the engine turned it way to fast and fried it probaly the amature messed up and the brushes are shot mght be able to rebuild it or replace
