"why would one get a long or short shaft outboard motor? i am looking for a 9.9 hp to power a 12-15 foot boat, idealy with a steering wheel.
what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?"

"Short, or standard, shaft engines are intended for a transom height of approx 15" (381mm), long shaft for 20" (508mm), and extra long for 25" (635mm).
