"Just got this old girl, 1973 Luhrs, previous owner passed away, she's been sitting there in the yard for five years. LM 318, mechanic installed new Carter AFB to get her started. Runs fine but idles very fast when cold. I can't rely on the old tach, which I suspect it adds 1000 RPM to the true RPM, in which case cold idle is about 2200.

After a few minutes of warmup I can goose the throttle and she comes down to about 900. Disconnecting electric choke while running has no effect.

Mechanic doesn't want to know me any more, so I'm on my own here.

Also I see a little gas in the water, which worries me."

"Don't sweat the gas in the water, but definitely readjust the linkage that's causing your high idle when the choke is less than wide open--that's for cars. Look for a cam (left side of carb) that rotates as the chke is closed. There's a screw that bottoms on this cam--back it WAY out so it doesn't touch it ever again, and your problem will be history.

"I noticed earlier today that just a little finger pressure on that linkage has considerable effect on the idle speed. But I didn't know about that screw.

Thank you, Jeff, will do."
