"Hints and suggestions on getting some of the play out of my steering that I notice a low speeds. How much tolorance is normal. When you move the outdrive by hand, their is a little play. How hard is it to replace bushings of bearings that might be involved. Where do you start replace the cables first, new rack steering? cable adjustments? Could use some pointers.

thanks"

"most deep V hulls exhibit a bit of wander that is often mistaken for drive play. Beyond that...
If there IS excessive play you need to find out where it is, not just start replacing parts (unless you like spendng money!).
Starting at the drive, the places where there is a possibility of "play"(remember you do need SOME play) ...

1) Yoke bushings...these are the bushings on the stainless steel pivots where the drive attaches to the transom shield. These are the pivots that the drive rotates on when the drive is lifted.
2) The special bolt that connects the steering helmet to the top of the drive.
3) The bolts that connect the steering yoke to the steering helmet.
4) Connection of the steering cable to the "tiller arm" (inside the boat at the transom)
5) The steering cable's outer sheath is clamped to the transom...make sure there is no play there.
6) Least likely... the steering rack and pinion.

There is a set of bushings and a needle bearing that the drive pivots on when you steer. This is another (unlikely) possibility."

"If you upgrade from cable steering to hydraulic steering, you will likely notice that the play you mention and (most if not all the) wandering is gone for good. This, of course, provided that the bushings in the outdrive are in fair condition and the tiller arm is tightly attached to the steering yoke."
