Both engines quit at different

Both engines quit at different times. The ignition relay on my 1996 Crusader 454xl 330hp engines gets super hot. When I change the relay the engine restarts and runs untill that relay gets really hot. Does anyone know what is causing this relay to get so hot?

"Only thing I can think of is that the relay is connected directly to the alternator output instead of the battery, which provides some modulation of the high voltage. I did that to a tach in my old racecar and fried it.
