"Hello everyone, I have a 1981 40 hp mercury that has been sitting for a year or more, the problem is after starting the motor it runs rough sometimes but as you give it gas it sputters like it wants to go but no dice. Slowly giving it gas it will eventualy git up to speed and run good once there but anything in the low rpm range the motor sputters bad. Today I installed 2 new spark plugs fuel filter and fuel can hose and bulb. The problem got a little better but still persists. When I got home I pulled the plugs and the top plug looked new but the bottom plug look like it had carbon build up or something. One last thing when you turn the motor off sometimes it leaks gas out of the top of the carb! Any help would be great!"
