How to get 5hp Merc out of hibernation

"Hi all, This is the story of a 5hp longshaft Merc o/b that has been in upright dry storage for 10years. Questions are about how to bring this back.

At storage, the engine was run dry of stabilized gas & fogged (and plug put back in), the engine was sprayed everywhere with that oily aircraft stuff and flushed in a freshwater tank. The lower gearlube was also replaced but used for a few hours before storage. Took the cowling off today and it looks shiny just like the day I stored it in 1998!. With disconnected plug I find the engine turns with compression and the prop spins a little (as before) when in neutral. I have not attempted to fully start it. Some reading suggests further preparation is needed and one frequent mention in this forum is that impellers rot anyway. The most noticable deficit thus far is that turning the engine left/right in the bracket is stiff. Otherwise all the other controls seem to move ok. No visible rust.

I'm a fairly able diy Volvo car guy so I'd like to use my abilities here if possible. Here's my questions:

#1- what year is this (I bought it in the 90s and the serial number is OD984545)?

#2- should I get/install an impeller/pump kit? Does anyone have the part# for that kit and where should I look for procedure / instructions (are the $5.oo CDs on ebay sufficient for this)?

#3- what lubrication points should I address at this time and should I go richer than the usual 50:1 fuel/oil mix for the first couple of hours?

#4 - what attention or checks should I make to the carb or spark before attempting restart?

#5 - what else should I check out pre-start? Can you recommend a website that covers how to return a stored engine to service?

#6- can I replace the 'Mercury' decals on the cowling and where can I source those?

This was a darling engine that ran like a champ. I'd like to bring it back to service. Thanks in advance for your help.

's worth - other readers, please weigh in and/or advise as necessary, as I don't claim to be an expert on the topic.

#1 - looks like a 1995 US-made model, does that make sense? (the first "O" is a zero)

#2 - try the parts lookups here http://www.mercruiserparts.com or here http://www.crowleymarine.com/parts.cfm. Alternatively, a Merc dealer could probably help you order the parts in no time.

As for the $5 manuals, your mileage may vary, since these can range from grainy scans of Seloc or Clymer books, to the original electronic Merc shop manuals in PDF format. It can be hard to tell from the item listing. Either way, you'll probably get the info you need, provided you don't mind a bit of minor copyright infringement along the way...

I would think that you could at least start up the engine and see if water is pumping out of the pee hole. If it is, then I presume you could just proceed, keep an eye on the water stream, and replace the impeller and gaskets as soon as you get the appropriate parts.

#3 - you can try to locate a manual for your engine here http://www.brunswickmarineemea.com/download/preparesearch?mod=4&lang=EN - the user manual should have the basic lube points covered.

#4 - anyone, tell me if I'm wrong, but I'd imagine as long as you have sufficient spark from the plugs to the engine block when cranking the starter, you probably don't need to adjust anything in before it's running? I would probably stick in new plugs anyway.

#6 - some decals are available on the spare parts lookups, so have a look there, usually under "Miscellaneous parts" or "Service & Support Material" - see what you can find. eBay might be a source as well.

Hope this is of some help - resident gurus, please correct and/or add as necessary!

"It soilds like all the proper steps were takem for long storage so I don't "think" you will have any problems with gummed up fuel in the carb or fuel pump. However, you should replace the impeller as they can dry rot from sitting so long. If more work is required you may want to read this: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086"
