Question on frozen steering

"I have an '87 Ranger that has a frozen steering, my fault, hardly ever use the boat and it just sits on my boat lift. I learned from a guy at lunch today that a common practice now to free these frozen steerint cables is there are places that pump in hot steam which cleans out the rust and frees up the steering. Anyone hear of this and is it fairly successful?"

"Have you checked that it the cable and not that it is stuck in the pivot Tube? Disconnect the nut where the cable joins the tube, disconnet the steering link and try to pull the cable out of the pivot tube...if it doesn't move freely it is likely to be stuck and not the cables."

What I have seen is the the steel armor shield cables rust and swell. This clamps the steering cable. this makes freeing impossible. These are under the plastic cover sheath making near impossible to see. Of course there are other reasons.
