"John, if your fuel bulb will not pump up "firm" with obvious gas in the line you most likely have an air leak either in:
the line itself,
the bulb or it's connections,
the fittings on either end of the hose,
the tank fitting/engine fitting, or,
even a burst/unhooked fuel line in the engine itself.

It could also be possible that the pick-up tube inside the tank became dislodged or is otherwise not low enough in the tank to "suck up" the fuel.

Pick an end, either "inside" the tank or at the carb and work back checking everything...."
