New to boating. I just bought a used proskiff boat with a mariner 75 hp engine S/N oc289013. Went to test it in a local river and was running fine for about an hour then as I was turning and decreased the engine speed the I felt a loss of forward speed and when I increased the power the prop was not running. Tried to go reverse and neutral no luck. Had to be towed in. What do you think could be the problem? and how expensive will it be to fix. The engine starts fine and runs well but just the prop will not engage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A simple guess is to remove the cover of the engine and inspect the linkage that tell your "transmission" that you want F/N/R. You will see a small shaped cog that raises or lowers the forward/reverse gear. Inspection and intuition should show you what needs to be fixed or adjusted. Good luck.
