I've had this Mariner 28 for a short time and am wondering what year it is.
SN 64457422
Can it charge it's own battery? It has an electric start and when I try to use the manual the starting rope doesn't go back in.
Thanks for any help.

"Patrick, that's a 1976 Yamaha built Mariner. The serial is read as 644-57422 if looking for parts.

This model did come with a rectifier from factory, so if working it should recharge your battery. A quick test - with the motor "not" running a volt meter at the battery should show about 12.5 volts. With the motor running it should jump up to about 13.5 volts.

The manual start failing to retract properly is probably due to a tired/worn spring in the assembly.

A new spring - Merc part number 24-82115M can be obtained from any Merc dealer for about 21 bucks, however, grabbing a "Mariner" manual for that vintage would definately prove helpful, recoil assemblies can be tricky to work with..."

"Same year and model, just came off the line 20 motors later than the first number you posted..."
