"Hi Guys,
Now that my engine (350 Gi) is out for an oil pan repl., I've noticed that the timing chain cover needs repl. also. What I'm wondering is if there really is a marine grade tin /steel or is this just a bunch of bunk?

Thanks as always, Jon Allen"

"Hi Jon,
im not convinced that there is a diffference in things made of sheet steel. Most steel sumps and chain covers etc are just pressed steel. The only area in which i can see that there could be a difference is the coating/paint they use. Anybody else have any thoughts on this matter?"

Paul is 100% correct, the only difference is whether you use mild steel or one of the many different grades of stainless steel. Stainless needs a mig or tig welder. The sump and chain covers on my Volvo are mild steel as I would expect all engines to be. The secret is in the coating that is applied - marine paint.
