I have a 1989 Force L drive th

I have a 1989 Force L drive that I finally got running after around 10 years. Needless to say its running pretty rough.

I plan on getting some fule system cleaner/carb cleaner. What else can be done to help get it running smoother?

My dad who gave me the boat told me about some newer synthetic two stroke oil that helps reduce the smoke so next fillup I am going to try that too.
 
A couple things come to mind.

Get a service manual.
Check compression. Do a tuneup. Check spark. Check and clean all electrical connections.
Replace fuel lines. Clean out float bowls. Use fresh fuel. New water pump impeller. Change drive lube.
