Can anyone tell me how to set

Can anyone tell me how to set the timing on my 1980 90hp mercury outboard. Please give as much detail as possible. I have a reapir manaul but is says to use a Dial Indicator. Is there a way to do this without this tool?

"The dial indicator is only used to set the pointer. If you are positive it has never been moved, you can skip that step. Other wise you will have to set it."
