"I have a 3L Merc. Is it normal for engine oil to turn a tan color. It did it last year when I used Quicksilver marine oil, so this year I changed to a regular 15-40 (Castrol) brand and it still does the same. Any ideas? Thanks."

That would be water getting in somehow as Bondo says.
If its just getting darker brown, thats normal.
