"Generally any engine with compressions of 120 psi or better (with none more than 15% under) is pretty healthy.
If you have two adjacent cylinders that are quite low suspect head gasket leakage.
If you have one or 2 that are more than 15% below average, you can do a pressure test on those cylinders to determine if its valves or rings causing the problem.
If you have any very low or zero, suspect hung valve, hole in piston, cracked head, etc.
If most are low (80 or less) and they vary a lot, you likely need valve or ring work; or a complete overhaul. Especially likely if the engine has more than 600-800 hours time.
