Replacing water pump 8 hp mercury

i have removed the 3 bolts on

i have removed the 3 bolts on the lower unit and the unit slips down about a inch and will not come any further so i can replace the water pump.what am i missing.does it have to be in neutral?is there a key or lock ring at the motor to release the shaft?i am lost.any help would be great.thanks in advance.Bill

"KEN,THANKS FOR THE HELP.I HAD LOOKED AT THAT LINKAGE EARLIER AND EVEN TOOK IT PART WAY OFF AND PUT IT BACK TOGETHER BECAUSE I WAS NOT SURE WHAT IT WAS.AFTER CHURCH TODAY I TOOK IT ALL THE WAY OFF AND THE LOWER UNIT JUST SLID OFF EASY AS PIE.ITS NICE TO KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING AND HOW TO DO IT.THANKS AGAIN FOR THE HELP.Bill"
