Just found this site and think I read any thing related to my
questions. My V8Ch-220, based on engine # (after X5469) calls for
timing at 15 BTDC. But this does not work. Earlier engines were timed
at 0 BTDC. Since 1964 (when built) it is certainly possible that the
distributor has been changed. Is that (plus lower octane fuel) why I
seem to run best at about 3 BTDC? I have the flat topped distributor
(Prestolite I believe). Even though all Champion references seem to
list RJ12YC as the correct spark plug for this engine, some people
feel this is too hot a plug. Any thoughts on the choice of spark plugs
and tips on timing. Maybe I should time with vacuum guage, but I am
not sure exactly what to do or aim for."
