"It's actually a full custom setup that I am building using an Accel throttle body, Ford EDIS 4 ignition, Lucas injectors, AEM fuel rail, Walbro 255 lph fuel pump, Aeromotive adjustabe fuel pressure regulator, Innovate LM1 integrated wideband O2 (self heating), GM 2 bar MAP sensor, GM coolant temp sensor, GM open element intake air temp sensor, tone ring and crank trigger from a Ford Escort all controlled with a home built stand alone called a Megasquirt. When I got this damned boat I was thinking to myself....I just took a walk back 40 years in engine management with a carburetor and POINTS?!?! Oh no....I'm a tinkerer and that is all going out the window. I might be shooting myself in the foot, but I hate maintenance so I could at least get rid of the points, mechanical fuel pump and carburetor anyway. Should be able to get rid of the choppy idle when cold with some tweaks of the warm up enrichments. Idle air control valve will get rid of any strange idle characteristics when the out drive is engaged. I'm in the process of sealing my Megasquirt for marine use now. My aim is reliability and trying to see if I can get fuel consumption down to my tightwad standards! Actually with this, you *could* run e-85 or even straight ethanol if you can keep the water out of it.
I'm staying away from one size fits all bolt on systems as they are very expensive and limit what you can do with them. I'll have around 1300 in this setup (depending on what the manifold winds up costing).
You know whether anyone has ever tried an aluminum head on one of these? I would think that would be a great weight advantage and lessen the propensity of the engine to detonate as the aluminum head would get rid of heat in the combustion chamber more efficiently."
